What's a Chad?

Our chads are little tags that attach to vials, tubes or similar objects without using adhesives. Instead, they use friction. Chads are punched from a sheet of paper using a vial. Ther chad attaches to the vial when it is pulled away from the sheet.

How Does this Work?

The hole in the chad is slightly smaller than the diameter of the vial. As the vial is inserted into the hole, the flexible plastic which forms the chad is stretched tightly around the vial. When the vial is removed, the attachment of the chad to the vial is stronger than the attachment of the chad to its sheet and so it is removed with the vial.

What’s the Advantage?

This is quick! This is legible! This is waterproof and solvent resistant. Have you ever tried to label a 6 x 32 mm glass vial with a marking pen? Have you ever tried to label 192 such vials with a marking pen? Could you read the numbers later? Did they smudge? Was this boring? Were you afraid to show your thumbs in public because of the cryptic black marks on them?

Chads are thin, flexible tags that remain with the vials and keep their identity intact. You can tag vials with chads and load them into a fraction collector, or a 96-well plate, or a freezer. When vials are thawed, paper labels get soggy from condensation, smearing ink or weakening adhesion. Chads won't. They're waterproof and don't use adhesive. They are pre-numbered and colored for convenience.
