Raturn Overview
Liquid swivels are traditionally used for infusions and microdialysis in awake animals. However, swivels suffer from serious limitations:
- Limited number of channels.
- Additional channels increase resistance to rotation.
- Each additional channel has a larger dead volume.
- Seal failure contaminates adjacent channels.
- Seal wear is accelerated by physiological saline solutions.
- Requires commutator to connect wires to implanted electrodes.
Although such restrictions are unattractive, there have been noviable alternatives to a liquid swivel before. The BASi Raturn offers an entirely new approach to awake animal monitoring. There is no liquid swivel or commutator. Tubing and wires remain contiguous from the devices to the animal. This conserves system volume and provides more secure connections. There is no restriction on the number of channels. Use up to 8 lines of tubing, wires, or optical fibers. There are no cannulae to connect and no intervening swivel - just feed the lines through an open hole.
There are no seals to leak or degrade, making the Raturn a far more reliable method for transporting fluids than a liquid swivel. Cross-talk between swivel channels due to a seal breach can be disastrous, but you may not know about it until much later when you analyze data. Swivels don't always advertise a failure with a leak. The payback in security and time savings makes a Raturn well worth the investment.
Stand-alone Raturn
The BASi Raturn is now available as a stand-alone caging system. The BASi Raturn is a patented system that eliminates the need for liquid swivels. The Stand-alone Raturn is available for use with a Microdialysis Bowl or a Metabolic Cage.
